I am a self-taught painter currently living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). I recently graduated from a Bachelor of Science at the Australian National University and am currently completing my Honours year at La Trobe University, majoring in molecular biology.
Much of my work is concerned with memory and sentimentality. Figurative scenes are stripped and scoured of their detailed truth. The resulting images are evocative of both the memory and the original image, but also a third image of anonymous sentimentality. The subjects are personal but ubiquitous—a friend pouring a beer, the impression of a Weber BBQ and an Instagram geotag. Using a restricted palette and slow deliberate mark-making to embellish these memories with absence.
I have recently been concerned with imbuing the visual language of the sciences with syrup-like sentiment. There is a fallibility in both the haziness of memory and the absolutist nature of scientific imagery.
